Friar's significance to the play
Friar plays a major role in the play of Romeo and Juliet. In the play the Friar has a very close relationship with Romeo which shows later when Romeo ask the Friar to marry the newly in love couple. The Friar agrees to marry the couple hoping it will end the feud between the Capulets and Montagues. This works out fine until Romeo is banished from Verona and Juliet is to wed Paris. The Friar comes up with a plan with Juliet for her to fake her death by using a poison. She is to die but come back to life later in the building where all dead Capulets lie and Romeo will be there to take her away. It was working until the Friar couldn't send out the letter explaining the plan to Romeo. Romeo only hears the news of Juliet's death, he comes back to Verona and dies at Juliet's death bed where she wakes up and ultimately kills herself. The Friar is later called to explain the story of Romeo and Juliet to the Prince, Capulets, and Montagues.

Shakespeare created Friar Lawrence to help move the story along. Friar Lawrence is reasons why Romeo and Juliet are married and could also be argued as to why the two star crossed lovers are dead. He is the reason why this play happened the way it did.
Friar Lawrence is an accurate presentation of the time period because a Friar is a man who instead of barricading himself from the world like other monks would do. Friars like Friar Lawrence would go out into the world and preach God. |
